What comes to mind when you hear the word “overseer”? The first time I heard it being used as a position was in my first year as an undergraduate at the university. It actually meant that such people were to ensure that the members of that church were well catered for. While I don’t know what revelation was behind such an executive title, I do know what God said in Genesis 1:28 (NKJV), which has been the sole reason why man exists on this earth. He said,
[28] … “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
The question is, why did God say this? After making the world and bringing order to it, why will He tell man to be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it? The reason is simple – God created man to be the overseer of His creation.
God’s appointed overseer over the earth
God didn’t want the earth to become formless and void as it happened at first in Genesis 1:2. So, the Elohim (the Godhead) came together and said,
… “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 1:26 (NKJV)
Can you read that scripture again, this time at a slower pace? The reason why God created man was for him to have dominion over all the earth, not even to worship Him (even though that is important), as many people say. That is why even unbelievers who understand this thing end up excelling highly in any life endeavour, especially in the business world. Why does God allow all these things to happen? It isn’t because God hasn’t seen it. Instead, it’s a command He has given to all men. Take it, and you’ll benefit from it; play with it, and others will succeed and even rule over your life as they create products and services you cannot live without. Don’t be deceived. Take God’s charge and walk with it.
God didn’t want the earth to become formless and void as it happened at first in Genesis 1:2. So He created man to be the overseer of His creation by dominating it.
Be fruitful and multiply
When did you last eat an orange fruit without seeing seeds in it? Absolutely impossible. Right? Yes. Whatever God created, He also placed in it what it takes to reproduce after its kind. So, if God has charged you to be fruitful and multiply, guess what? There are seeds in you that are not limited to semen (in men) and ovaries (in women) to produce babies. God has blessed you with ideas, innovations, and spiritual gifts you can use to impact your world in a mighty way, even adding many financial benefits. But the reality is that they are seeds. Seeds remain dormant until it is sown. So, one of the primary reasons why some people are poor in this world is not because of low salaries. Instead, it can be traced to the unharnessed gifts in them.
Replenish the earth and subdue it
What makes you think you cannot make it with the little skills you have? Is it self-doubt? Then, I recommend a word in the same Genesis 1:28 that you may not have paid attention to. That word is “replenish”.
To replenish something means to refill it. So, the energy to bring to life the gifts God has given you to impact the world can be replenished when you feel exhausted. Many people who start businesses downplay the importance of this principle, so they don’t last. If you have come up with a good product or service for people, you must reproduce that thing so much that it dominates the market. Until you reach this level, you’ll not see the maximum impact you can make with what you have. So, be strategic and don’t copy others. Look unto God and let Him help you stand out from the competition. It is well with you.
