One of the most powerful industries in the world today is the energy industry. By saying this, I am referring to the production and utilisation of electricity. Clearly, no country can do much if the government has problems with electricity production and distribution. It is because of this that many countries, especially in Africa, experience power cuts. Taking this scenario in mind, let’s delve deeper into today’s article, from which I derived the theme “if your whole body is full of light” from what Jesus said in Luke 11:36. Let’s consider reading the background of the study.

[34] “Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. [35] See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. [36] Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.” — Luke 11:34-36 (NIV)

From the scripture above, Jesus was comparing two things: light and darkness. And instead of attributing light to creatures like the sun and the moon, He referred it to the eye. Really? There’s something to learn here.

The light of life

Think of a blind person. Have you seen that without someone guiding him, he can’t move around safely? But why? Because he is blind, he can’t guess which place is safe to pass and which has obstacles to avoid. So, to the human body, its central organ that makes life navigation easy is the eye. However, Jesus was referring to an eye that can see beyond the physical. It’s called the spiritual eye, which is part of the spiritual senses every Christian has (although there are variations in the level with which each child of God develops it).

If your spiritual eye is enlightened, it’ll give light to your body, enabling you to live more easily following God. Why do I say this? We live in a world full of evil. So, it’s common to see temptations coming from various sources aimed towards making the children of God victims of sin. Such temptations are fleshly desires triggered by the devil’s suggestive thoughts in the mind. So, God, knowing this, said through Apostle Paul in Romans 12:2(NKJV) that,

[2] “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

It’s through renewing your mind with God’s Word that you can be empowered to live above the dictates of the sinful flesh. Therefore, those who follow Jesus will have the light of eternal life (see John 8:12), enabling them to view things from a spiritually discerning perspective rather than submitting to pleasing fleshly desires, which ultimately lead to condemnation.

Nourish your spirit

After knowing all these, you may ask, What must I do to live a life that honours God every day? It’s simple. Nourish your spirit. With what? Studying the Bible consistently, praying, fasting, attending church gatherings, and engaging in various spiritual exercises will help you connect with God. That must be a conscious thing you walk with, because there will be times when you’ll still be tempted to do things God doesn’t like. Those who fail to have present-mindedness on the things of God are usually not able to withstand the fleeting desires of the flesh and end up in sin, enabling the devil to afflict them with various self-condemning thoughts. Hmm!!!

Understand that your body is the powerhouse of everything you’ll do on this Earth. If you are going to fulfil God’s purposes, you need your body to do it. However, it is your mind that helps you decide what you use your body for. So, get to know God, and you’ll have a fulfilling life here on Earth.
