How To Filter Out Harmful Content On Your Facebook News Feed

Facebook is such a big social media platform. It’s my favourite at the moment. But I’ve asked several people who seem not to like Facebook that much why they don’t like the platform.

Some say the spammy messages are just too much. Others also told me that there’s a mixture of good and harmful content on the platform. Well, here is the truth.

Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook as a platform for students at Havard University to connect with one another online. Because of that, the app has been programmed, such that you automatically follow anybody you accept his friend request or send a request. Many people didn’t (and some still don’t) know this. So they kept sending and accepting friend requests from even people they didn’t know personally, merely to make their number of friends on the platform increase.

Today, people now find both good and bad content daily on their news feeds and wonder how to filter them out. I remember dealing with this issue about two years ago.

I researched how “follow” and “unfollow” work on the platform, how to regulate it without affecting my friends’ list, and how to filter out every single person and page I’m following that’s not serving me with godly content.

How “Follow” and “Unfollow” work on Facebook

As I wrote earlier, you automatically follow a page or a person when you click the “Like” button or “Accept/Add friend” button respectively. So the more friends you have and pages you like, the more people you follow on the platform. And that also means anything they post will appear on your news feed.

That implies if you want to mass unfollow people, you have to get special time to do it because there’s no system in the app to do mass unfollowing.

So to help you do that, I’m going to guide you about how to go about it.

Unfollowing Friends without losing your connection with them

This is one of the most tedious aspects of this work. It took me about three hours to do it because my friends were on the platform, and by then was around 3500. Here’s the guide.

Step 1: Log on to your Facebook profile account.

Step 2: Tap on the Menu tab (the one with three lines).

Step 3: Click on the Settings Icon.

Step 4: Tap on Profile Settings

Step 5: Scroll down to the “Feed Settings” section and tap on “News Feed.”

Step 6: Next, Click on the “Unfollow” tab and move to “unfollow” any page, group or friend you want.

Note:

1. The above steps are the same for both Android and iOS devices.

2. Keep in mind that unfollowing friends won’t make you lose your connection with them. You’ll continue to be friends. However, you won’t see their posts on your news feed. So please choose wisely.

For me, I chose to follow only people, pages and groups that post godly content.
