We Did Not Follow Cunningly Devised Fables – 2 Peter 1 v 16-18

Excerpt

The Word is truth, and it’s not fake. But to insist on this, Peter wrote about it in 2 Peter 1:16-18, where he took time to disband the claims of false teachers and prophets going around to say the gospel wasn’t relevant in those times. Today, that scripture, 2 Peter 1:16-18 is important to discuss because the attack on the gospel hasn’t changed. Let’s take them on verse by verse.

For some time now, there have been several attacks on the authenticity of the Bible from many people, especially Muslims and other religious bodies. Some say the Bible is made up of concocted stories written in a book to deceive many. Others say that there’s no God and that life is lived by some common sense. Beloved, don’t believe all those lies. The Word is truth, and it’s not fake. But to insist on this, Peter wrote about it in 2 Peter 1:16-18, where he took time to disband the claims of false teachers and prophets going around to say the gospel wasn’t relevant in those times. Today, that scripture is important to discuss because the attack on the gospel hasn’t changed. Let’s take them on verse by verse.

Verse 16

[16] “For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.” — 2 Peter 1:16 (NKJV)

Please read that again if you skimmed it. Peter says he, with the other apostles, didn’t follow cunningly devised fables when they preached about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (speaking of the second coming of Christ). They were eyewitnesses of His Majesty. Think about that!

The apostles saw many miracles Jesus did, and John stated that there weren’t enough books to write them in (see John 21:25). Peter knew and emphasised in his first epistle that Jesus would come back again for the believers (see John 14:2, 1 Peter 5:4).

Today, the narrative isn’t the same. It’s no longer what Peter and the apostles experienced, but your personal encounters with the living God in your walk with Him in this very life. I’m sure that you have at least one testimony of the things God has done for you that no human interpretation can override that that was the Lord’s doing. That is what I am talking about. The gospel isn’t fake. Don’t ever believe it when people say it’s a lie.

Verse 17

For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” — 2 Peter 1:17 (NKJV)

The verse says that Jesus received honour and glory when a voice announced His unveiling after John the Baptist baptised Him (see Matthew 3:17). Since the voice came from heaven, then it means everybody heard it, including John the Baptist and those who were by the river Jordan’s bank. That declaration wasn’t private. It was loud enough for people like Matthew to record in his gospel book. Jesus is the beloved Son of God.

The gospel isn’t fake. Don’t ever believe it when people say it’s a lie.

Verse 18

“And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.” – 2 Peter 1:18 (NKJV)

To add up to all the things the Apostle Peter said about Jesus, he also spoke about what the Father said of Jesus when He (Jesus) was on the Mount of Transfiguration with himself (Peter), John and James when Moses and Elijah came to speak with Him (see Matthew 17:1-6). There are more testimonies that show that Jesus is the truth.

Believe in Jesus, for He has the key to your eternal life.
