Finding Your Life By Losing It For Jesus’ Sake

Several people have defined “life” in their own terms. There’s a wind of teaching going around the world, propagated by some unbelievers, that life is all about being a child, going to school, getting a job, getting married, having kids, building a house, leaving a legacy and dying. And although what they are saying makes sense to the human mind, it’s a doctrine from the pit of hell because it nullifies the place of the Spirit and eternity in people’s lives. Jesus said in Luke 12:15 (NKJV) that,

“… Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

The word “possessions,” as used in the scripture, doesn’t only mean physical belongings. It stretches as far as immaterial possessions in life – such as a job, an influence or even popularity. (Eternal) life doesn’t consist of all those things. So what is life?

What is Life?

The best description of a product is in the mind of the one who made it. God is the source of life. So He’s the One to define it. But the life that He gives isn’t like how the world sees it. He who accepts Jesus as Lord and personal Saviour receive eternal life (John 3:16). So the child of God doesn’t have an ordinary life, but an eternal one.

Eternal life, as defined by Jesus in John 17:3, is all about knowing God and Himself. So to find meaning in your life, you must be connected to Jesus. Without Him, you’re not living but only existing.

To find meaning in your life, you must be connected to Jesus. Without Him, you’re not living but only existing.

Finding Life

Now that you understand what life means, the next is to find it. By saying this, I don’t mean you don’t have Jesus because if you have Jesus, you have life. Instead, I’m speaking about submitting yourself to Him to show you what it means to have a purpose-driven life. In Matthew 10:39 (NKJV), Jesus said,

“He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.”

So finding your life is directly linked to losing it, for Jesus’ sake. That means you cannot find your purpose if you don’t serve Jesus. And when I talk about serving Jesus, I’m not only referring to “church work” per se. I’m talking about expressing Jesus wherever you are, be it a hospital, school classroom or even at the market.

Do whatever you’re doing in reverence to Jesus, knowing that He’s the best rewarder of your labour for Him. He will give you a life of meaning.
