Work is good. But unfortunately, many people don’t like it. They love getting paid but do not care much about the effort they must put into getting the benefits. Several research firms have published statistics revealing a surging percentage of workers who hate their jobs. But the question is, is that a good thing? Colossians 3:23-24 (NKJV) says,
[23] “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, [24] knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”
Now, pause on this verse and reflect on it peacefully. God has given a word about how each of us should approach work, especially for the children of God. Let’s dive deeper.
Do your work heartily as unto the Lord.
Serving both as a worker in the tech industry and a minister of the gospel, I can attest that ministry work is somehow more challenging to do than secular work. For some people, doing ministry may look more fulfilling than their secular jobs, which I understand. But what God said in Colossians 3:23-24 doesn’t give any exceptions or divisions on approaching what we do. God says, Whatever you do, work with all your heart as if you are doing it unto Him.
You may not be a full-time minister as you are reading this. So, you probably juggle secular work with ministerial work. Yes, what you are doing isn’t bad. Truthfully, sometimes, the ministry doesn’t guarantee much profit when done full-time, especially in the formative seasons. But dear friend, don’t treat that secular work less because it is also God’s work, which you may be using to partly fund the work of the ministry. Please don’t do it shabbily. Just do it with your heart because, of a truth, when you work with your heart, you’ll do that work much better, even without supervision.
No matter where you are, whether unpaid or underpaid, work with all your heart and pray because God will lift you as you do that.
God is your best rewarder.
Sometimes, you may not be paid how much you are worth. Yes, many employees, including some ministers, are underpaid. That has been a real problem in many workplaces. In fact, some employees respond to this by resigning or applying for new roles elsewhere as a way to improve their lives, which isn’t bad. But in the quest to do that, you must not forget that your real value is known best by God. No amount of salary a company gives you will be worth that value. So, work with all your heart because that work will make you better at what you do, which you can use as an experience to upgrade your career. Proverbs 22:29 (NKJV) says,
[29] “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men.”
Now, read this scripture carefully. If you excel in your work, there is a prophecy from scripture that you will stand before kings, not unknown (mere) men. So, no matter where you are, whether unpaid or underpaid, work with all your heart and pray because God will lift you as you do that.
All the best in the work of your hands!
