What comes to mind when you hear the instruction “Let there be light” as you read Genesis 1:3-5? Maybe, to you, it’s about God distinguishing light from darkness. But I think it is more than a mere creation story that several people skim. That is why I am glad to write this article. I hope you enjoy it.
Verse 3
“Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.”
Genesis 1:3 (NKJV)
After God created the heavens and the Earth in Genesis 1:1, and the Earth became formless and void due to a punishment from Lucifer’s rebellion in heaven, it was time for God to restore order to the world. And guess what? The first thing He dealt with was darkness. Darkness, here in the Biblical context, simply means the absence of light. But why did God do that? He could have started creating animals or making light objects. It was on purpose, and here is why.
In 1 John 1:5, the Bible says God is light, and in Him, there is no darkness at all. That means God doesn’t co-exist with darkness in the same place. Before He will clear any chaos, right from the beginning of creation till now in people’s lives, His nature as light has to be brought to bear first. That is why His Spirit comes to live inside every person who gets born again.
Sometimes, when God deals with certain issues in our lives, they can be lessons we can use to teach others when they come to us.

Note that it was the Spirit of God that brooded over the face of the waters in Genesis 1:2. So, as for the Holy Spirit, His light can be resident in you even though there are dark (bad) things going on in your life. Why? Because it is His duty to transform you and work in you to will and fulfil God’s pleasure (see Philippians 2:13). Are you feeling like God is in your life, but things aren’t going well? Then pray and command God’s light to shine in those areas of your life. He will surely intervene; when He does, don’t hesitate to obey what He says.
Verse 4
“And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.”
Genesis 1:4 (NKJV)
Can you reread this scripture, this time in a slower manner, just in case you skimmed over it? When God commanded the light to come, He didn’t do it with the sole intention of dealing with darkness (evening) forever. But after He did that and saw that the light was good, He divided the light from the darkness. What can you and I learn from this?
Sometimes, when God deals with certain issues in our lives, they can be lessons we can use to teach others when they come to us. Is there a childhood trauma God has healed you from when you came to know Him? It’s not in vain. You are not supposed to live in that realm, but you must separate it and only use it when you need to tell your story to help others. Many people are discouraged and dejected in life and may look up to you to help them. Be a people encourager, dear one.
Verse 5
“God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.”
Genesis 1:5 (NKJV)
Now, after separating the light from the darkness, God named it. That is why we have the words “Day” and “Night” today. When it is evening time, without electricity, there is darkness. And when it is daytime, there is light. Today, industrialisation has made it possible to enjoy many benefits and do many things, both during the day and night. So, if humans have done enough research to invent these things, why don’t you allow God to name the seasons in your life right? When they are named right, there are some things you won’t blame Him anymore for happening in your life.
May the Lord help you!
