As emphasised in various previous Study Scripture Article series, the 2nd Epistle of Peter to the Body of Christ is one of the books filled with many warnings. He dealt with false prophets and teachers alike. But today, I want to focus on what he wrote about “The Day of The Lord.” Are you ready? Let’s dive in.
Verse 10
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.” – 2 Peter 3:10 (NKJV)
The verse above talks about what will happen during the second coming of Jesus Christ. On that day, it’ll be like a thief in the night, so unexpected. Many things will be happening in the world, but things will happen so fast that I don’t think the media will be able to catch it that fast. The scripture says:
- The heavens (signifying the skies) will pass away (disappear) with great noise.
- The elements (basic composition of the Earth and planetary bodies) will melt with fervent heat. The Earth and its works (buildings, roads, companies, systems, etc.) will all be burned up.
On that day, the man with a trillion-dollar mansion won’t see its worth. Jesus will be exalted.
Verse 11
“Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,” – 2 Peter 3:11 (NKJV)
Therefore, since all the things in the Earth and Earth itself will be dissolved, there is a clarion call on each believer to be in holy conduct and godliness. Somehow, many people have treated this caution lightly. Out of impatience, many believers have joined the world in immorality instead of influencing it with Christ. That should not be so. Don’t compromise living by the standards of the gospel.
Verse 12
“looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?” – 2 Peter 3:12 (NKJV)
When you fix your eyes on eternity, you’ll prioritise serving God and dwelling in holiness. But you drift from God’s leadership when you get distracted by the world’s events. If what you want to get in the world, material and immaterial possessions, will all be dissolved with fire, why concentrate on it so much more than God? Yes, God wants us to be wealthy and enjoy life, but not at the expense of living as enemies to the cross of Christ.
Verse 13
“Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” – 2 Peter 3:13 (NKJV)
After resetting your focus on eternity, bear it in your consciousness that there come new heavens and Earth where there’ll be no trace of unrighteousness. May the Lord empower you to live unto Him in this evil age.
You are a blessing!
