The Constancy of God’s Word in Changing Worlds – 2 Peter 3v5-7

Excerpt

Do not forget that God's Word remains true despite the changing things in the world. If you ever lose consciousness of this, at least remind yourself how old the Bible is, yet it has never faded or lost impact.

In the last study scripture article, I wrote about how scoffers have emerged, working hard to discredit the authenticity of God’s Word. But today, I am considering continuing what the Apostle Peter said, which is meant to help every believer remember the constancy of God’s Word, even as things in the world keep changing. Let’s dive deeper.

Verses 5-6

“For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.” – 2 Peter 3:5-6 (NKJV)

Note that the word “they” in the above scripture (2 Peter 3:5) refers to the scoffers spoken about in the earlier part of the chapter. Such people, who may have had a certain knowledge of the Bible, forget that God first created the heavens (skies) and the Earth in Genesis 1:1. The heavens have always been in existence, even though the first Earth God created was standing out of water and in the water. That means the Earth, even though existent, was separated from the waters when God was remaking the Earth after the first one was destroyed by massive flooding (see Genesis 1:2).

Verse 7

“But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” – 2 Peter 3:7 (NKJV)

The heavens (skies) and the remade Earth, which we live in today, are preserved by the same Word of God. So, the reason why the sea is where it is, planets are where they are, and everything in the solar system is in proper functionality is because God’s Word is holding it.

Since scripture has said this, what makes you think God’s Word is not true? If scoffers of the gospel forget these things and start saying things contrary to the gospel of Christ, then don’t be like them. Do not forget that God’s Word remains true despite the changing things in the world. If you ever lose consciousness of this, at least remind yourself how old the Bible is, yet it has never faded or lost impact. May the Lord be with you in our faith journey.
